Auxiliary drying is well-known for a long time for the drying of water based colors. Due to a focused heating of inks and varnishes, the water resp. solvent is expelled. In many cases, however, these dryers are the performance-defining element in those machines: thick varnish layers cannot be dried fast enough or water-based systems cannot replace solvent-based systems due for lack of dryer performance. NIR-dryers have especially been conceived for applications with a demand of a high degree of dryness at minimized heating of the substrate such as paper or plastics. Due to the focused, extremely short-waved arrangement of the NIR-emitters (Working-Frequency between 0.8 – 1.5 µm) a maximum heating of the water based inks and varnishes is achieved and also made possible due to the high radiation density. The substrate in this area is widely transparent and takes up clearly less energy compared to conventional infrared systems. Thus, NIR–dryer require a minimum installation space and can be upgraded almost everywhere.
